farmstead history
A Pequea Township Century Farm, Herrbrook has been in
the continuous care of Rod Houser's family since 1883 when his
great-grandparents, Martin and Annie Herr built it on a family tract.
It lies within an agricultural preservation district.
Through the years, this property has been open to
extended family and many households. Shared living and a spirit of
community mark this acreage as over ninety people have called
Herrbrook Farm their home.
At the turn-of-the-century, Herrbrook residents
accessed public transportation with both stage coach and trolley. The
Lancaster-Millersville-Pequea trolley ran right behind the cottage and
up through the upper yard where vestiges of the stone culvert and
trolley bed can be seen.
