spiritual direction at herrbrook
A creative listener is not someone who simply allows me to
say what I already want to say, but someone whose listening actually
makes it possible for me to say what I never could have said,
and thus to be a new kind of person, one I have never been before
and could not have been before this directed listening.
-James P. Carse, Silence of God: Meditation on Prayer

What is Spiritual Direction?
Finding one's way through the years
is an exterior and interior adventure,
not unlike sculpture or an archaeological dig.
A sculptor removes excess material
to discover the essential form underneath.
The intrigue for an archaeologist comes
when multiple layers
of history reveal story in context.
Sitting together with a director
in the presence of the Creator
unearths spirited language
and understanding for each phase of life.
Together, one on one, there is openness
to the dynamic and ordinary
ways
in which we sense the Divine day to day.
The centuries-old tradition of spiritual direction
inspires
* compassion for self and others
* listening to the Creator and creation
* a more intimate spirituality
* prayer and discernment
* authenticity in personal theology
* psychological and spiritual healing
* creativity
* hospitality
